Letters to the Editor

Editor:
This is a good time of year for parents of 6th and 7th grade boys to use an amazing resource in our neighborhood, Troop 14 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Troop 14 is more than 90 years old, and its relationship with its sponsor, Calvary Presbyterian Church, is one of the oldest in the United States. As scouts, youth camp, hike, help the community, and learn many skills while earning badges and advancing to the rank of Eagle Scout. The troop is steeped in tradition, and many of the expressions, cheers, yells, outings and ceremonies have been with Troop 14 for 50 years or more.

Troop alumni include a number of famous San Franciscans, and hundreds of the alumni maintain their ties with the Troop throughout their lives.

The troop will hold an open house at its Sept. 18 meeting. Bring your son and let him see what great things Boy Scouts do. Then he can find out about joining. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 2515 Fillmore St. (at Jackson Street), at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 923-1400, or send an e-mail to "Scouts@mckleroy.com."

Doesn't District 1 Supervisor Jake McGoldrick have better things to do than count trash receptacles?

It's clear that much consideration by the SF Department of Public Works went into the merits of removing some receptacles from city streets. Rather than giving the initiative a chance, McGoldrick raises "Cain" and has to hold a hearing. The supervisor would better serve his constituents by reviewing the ever-bloating city budget, the huge burden of present and future entitlements, etc. These are numbers Supervisor McGoldrick should be counting, not the number of trash receptacles in our neighborhood.
