Police Blotter
Possession of Stolen Property, Fraudulent Possession of Checks, False Identification:
Aug. 25, 6:38 p.m., 800 Block of La Playa
A woman approached the teller at a bank in a supermarket and requested payment
for a check. After signing the check and giving the teller a fingerprint, the
teller looked at the identification that the woman had forwarded and noticed
the picture did not match with the suspect. The teller went into an office and
called police. When the teller returned to the window, a second female suspect
tried to get the first suspect to leave. The teller refused to return the I.D.
or the check and the suspects fled. When officers arrived, they detained one
of the suspects as the other one fled. The suspect was transported to the Richmond
Station and booked.
Assault: Sept. 2, 1 a.m., 300 Block of Third Avenue
Officers responded to a report of an unconscious male bleeding from the head.
Officers determined there was a party in a home on the block, with alcohol being
served, when two of the attendees started arguing. One of the males punched
the other in the head, causing him to fall to the ground. The suspect fled.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Robbery with Gun: Aug. 24, 11:05 p.m., 1000 Block of Balboa Street
A man was walking on Balboa Street when he noticed three men at the corner in
front of him. As he approached, one of the suspects approached with a black
semi-automatic handgun. "Give me all your s__t," the suspect said. The 26-year-old
victim gave the suspect his bag, which contained blank checks and other paperwork,
and his wallet, with money and credit cards. The suspect lost sight of the suspects,
but a witness saw the three men get into a car being driven by another male
and speed off. Shortly after the incident, there was a reported robbery at 19th
Avenue and Anza Street, with the getaway car having nearly the same description.
Officers effected a traffic stop of the suspect's vehicle at Cabrillo Street
and Fourth Avenue. A cold show by the Richmond victim on Balboa Street failed
to produce a positive identification, but the victim in the 19th Avenue robbery
was able to I.D. one of the suspects. As well, the Balboa Street witness was
able to identify the vehicle as the one that he saw driving off. The suspect,
who was about 16 or 17 years of age, was taken to Richmond Station for booking.
Vehicular Burglary, Probation Violation: Aug. 28, 6:53 p.m., Euclid and
Masonic Avenues
Two officers in a marked patrol car were on duty when a call came in concerning
an auto break-in in progress. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered
one of the men described as a primary suspect. The officers made a U-turn in
their squad car when they noticed the man duck behind a car in an effort to
hide. After being ordered to the ground, the suspect dropped several items suspected
of being stolen from his hands. A cold show by a witness confirmed the perpetrator's
participation in the break-in, even though he was not the one who broke the
window. The witness said the two men were cruising down the street looking into
vehicles as they passed. At the scene of the crime, one of the suspects used
something in his hand to strike open the window. Before fleeing, the suspects
spent several minutes going through the vehicle looking for valuables. They
took a backpack and the victim's checkbook. A records check showed the arrested
suspect, who was 28 years old, was on probation for auto theft at the time of
his arrest.
Drug Sales: Sept. 1, 8:45 p.m., Clement Street and 10th Avenue
Officers on patrol observed what appeared to be a drug transaction taking place
in a vehicle. After about 10 minutes, the vehicle drove off with four occupants.
Officers in a marked vehicle were in pursuit when, suddenly, two passengers
in the rear seat jumped out and walked off in opposite directions. One officer
detained the two suspects that had exited the car while the other officer followed
the vehicle and effected a traffic stop. After the investigation and subsequent
consensual search of all parties, a large amount of marijuana was discovered
in the vehicle and in the backpack of one of the suspects who had exited the
car. Three adult males were transported to Richmond Station and charged with
possession and transportation of narcotics. The fourth suspect, a juvenile,
was released into his parents' custody.
