Cat Caper, Extortion: Reported Aug. 4, 4 p.m., Unit Block of Pinto Avenue
A woman reported to police that her 5-month-old kitten was missing and that
she had been subsequently contacted by a veterinarian company which reported
it had tracked the kitten via a microchip that was implanted in the young feline.
The owner of the cat contacted the person who had taken the kitten for medical care. The cat's owner was told she had to provide $600 for the cat's return.
The owner said she would reimburse the alleged extortionist for medical expenses for the kitten but not for any other costs. The owner informed the police of the alleged attempted extortion. Police contacted the person who was holding the kitten and explained that the microchip constituted legal registration of the animal and that they were required to return the kitten to its rightful owner.
The kitten was taken to the Taraval Police Station to wait for the rightful owner. The owner and the kitten were reunited, and the owner again offered to reimburse the suspect $117.25 for the cat's medical attention.
