As your Richmond District Supervisor for the last four
years, I have had the pleasure of working side by side with
many concerned residents to improve our neighborhood. I
want to serve our community for another four years because
I feel that I am the most knowledgeable, most experienced
and most passionate candidate running.
I have lived in the Richmond for more than 30 years and
love it here. I raised my family here and educated my children
in local public schools. I taught English at Presentation
High School for six years and, after that, at the University
of San Francisco. I have organized my neighbors around
significant community issues and served as founder of the
Richmond Community Association. Put simply, I have lived,
worked and breathed the district for most of my adult life.
I listen carefully and respond to the needs of District
1 residents, and my record of accomplishment reflects that
fact. Highlights of my first term include saving Fire
Truck 14, winning $325 million in new Muni funding, including
$600,000 to plan Geary Transit Corridor Improvements, and
co-sponsoring the Great Schools Charter Amendment, which
secured more than $300 million for San Francisco schools.
I fought to increase funding for the police department and
district attorney and passed the landmark Pedestrian Safety
Law. When the SF Recreation and Park Department pushed Rossi
Playground off its capital improvements project list because
of funding shortfalls, I secured funding to put the Rossi
renovation back on the list.
But small, daily improvements are just as important. It's
attention to detail that helps protect and improve the quality
of life in the Richmond, one block at a time. I have secured
many stop signs and streetlights and called the Department
of Public Works countless times to address everyday needs,
like street cleaning and sidewalk repair.
I work hard to reach consensus among district residents
when they are in conflict. I hold monthly town hall meetings
with translators so all residents can bring their concerns
to the table. I invite neighbors in conflict into my office
to mediate disputes and reach settlements, so disagreements
do not develop into more polarized and hostile long-term
problems. For example, when the Katherine Delmar Burke School,
located near Lincoln Park, sought a school drop-off zone,
neighbors strongly objected to the loss of street parking
spots. My office held many meetings until we found a solution
that all parties could accept, and could serve as the basis
for continuing good relations.
In four very short years, I am proud to have created consensus
not only amongst Richmond neighbors, but also amongst organizations
from across the political spectrum. This is why my endorsements
include the SF Democratic Party, Richmond District Democratic
Club, SF Firefighters, California Nurses Association, SF
Sierra Club, Tenants Union, Affordable Housing Alliance,
Rescue Muni, Deputy Sheriffs Association, Bicycle Coalition
and labor groups, such as SEIU State Council, SF Building
and Construction Trades Council and Local 2.
I am proud to have the support of elected officials, like
Carole Migden, Assemblyman Leland Yee, former Mayor Art
Agnos, former Mayor Frank Jordan, Public Defender Jeff Adachi,
Assessor Mabel Teng, San Francisco Sheriff Michael Hennessey,
Planning Commissioner Sue Lee, School Board Commissioner
Jill Wynns, Father Stephen Privett, SJ, USF President, Carolene
Marks, and of my colleagues on the Board, including supervisors
Michela Alioto-Pier and Sophie Maxwell.
We have accomplished a lot in the last four years and I
want to keep us moving forward. As your neighbor and
friend, I ask for your support for my reelection. I love
my community and my neighborhood, and I would be proud to
serve the Richmond for four more years.
