New Food Pantry to Open
A new food pantry to serve hungry residents in the Richmond District is opening
on Geary Boulevard.
The food pantry is sponsored by the Congregation Emanu-El as part of its "mitzvah,"
or good deed campaign.
On Sunday, Feb. 2, the pantry will host an opening party with ribbon cutting
ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Participants will receive training to provide assistance
at the pantry, located at 3821 Geary Blvd., between Second and Third avenues,
on subsequent Sundays.
Temple Emanu-El is the first local synagogue to open a pantry as part of the
SF Food Bank Neighborhood Grocery Network. The program provides low-cost food
from the SF Food Bank to community organizations, which distribute it for free.
"The pantry allows our students and volunteers to make a tangible connection
to what is needed in our neighborhood," said Rabbi Sydney Mintz.
Groceries at the Geary Boulevard pantry will be distributed on Sundays. For more information about the pantry, call Colleen Prince at 387-6700.
