Suspect Arrested in Sunset Homicide

A 35-year-old Sunset man was shot and killed on Feb. 17 after a dispute at the Pho Huynh Hiep 2 restaurant, located on Irving Street between 19th and 20th avenues.

When officers arrived on the scene, 39-year-old Bao Luu was still standing near the victim holding a semi-automatic handgun. Two beat officers, who witnessed the incident, tackled the suspect.

Luu has a long criminal history and has spent two stretches in state prison.

Officers and medical personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive the victim, identified as Cuong Lu.

Reportedly, the two men got into a verbal altercation inside the restaurant, which continued when they exited the business.

Luu was charged with murder and a weapons violation.

Local Schools Win Academic Award

Two Sunset District schools have been recognized for raising the test scores of its low income students.

Francis Scott Key and Ulloa elementary schools won Title 1 Academic Achievement Awards because they raised the test scores of its students in the past year.

"This award is significant because it recognizes the schools that are helping our lowest income students make outstanding gains to meet state academic standards," said SF Superintendent Carlos Garcia.

To meet the criteria for the Title 1 Academic Achievement Award, schools must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California's academic content standards.

Additionally, the school's socio-economically disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.
