Capt. Paul Chignell: Robbery Prevention Tips
Some of the most horrific crimes that occur all too frequently are street robberies. In fact, the San Francisco Chronicle recently published a story about the uptick in street robberies all over the Bay Area.
Most robbers are opportunists who seek out the most vulnerable victims and in areas where the chance of detection by the police and witnesses is slim. Unlike burglars, who break into homes and cars, robbers are more dangerous because they confront victims directly, and if the victim acts a certain way, the robber can become more violent.
Burglars want to get property and items of value quickly and leave - that is why most burglaries are in the daytime when people are not home.
With robbery, it is important to use your common sense. There are some basic rules that lessen your chance of being a victim.
Do not display items of value when out walking in public, particularly at night. Robbers are looking for purses, jewelry, cell phones and iPods.
If you are out at night, stay in well-lit areas where there are people around. If you sense you are being followed, go inside if you can, go to the other side of the street or seek out other people. Consider walking in groups rather than alone in the night-time hours. Carry a whistle or a chemical agent. Be aware of your surroundings when you are walking alone.
If you happen to be confronted by a robber, particularly if armed with a knife or gun, comply with the directions of the robber and give up your valuables - your life is not worth struggling with a suspect.
Call 911 immediately and give as complete a description of the suspect as you can. Ensure you note the color of the clothing, race, height, weight, scars or marks, facial hair, etc. If you see a vehicle, note the license number even if it is just a partial number or letter.
