Supervisor Ed Jew: Update on District Activities

District 4 Open House to be Held Sept. 20
Thanks to those of you who attended our August open house at ABC Bakery & Restaurant, 2500 Noriega St., on Aug. 16. These open houses are the best way I know to find out, first-hand, the kinds of problems people are having with city departments.

The Java Beach Cafe at Judah Street and La Playa will host our next open house, on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Street Fair, Block Party, Community Festival
The first annual Taraval Street Fair will take place on Saturday, Oct. 27, from noon until 6 p.m., at the west end of Taraval Street. The Taraval Parkside Merchants are sponsoring the event - they already have commitments from the San Francisco Zoo and a couple of local bands. It promises to be a wonderful family event on Halloween weekend. If you have the time to volunteer, there is a lot of organizing to do, and the merchants could use your help. Please contact my office at 554-7460 and we will pass on your information to the event coordinators.

The La Playa Festival (at Judah) will happen on Saturday, Sept. 8, beginning at 12:30 p.m. There will be a 37th Avenue Neighbors Block Party (at Noriega) on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The annual Sunset Community Festival will take place all day at 28th Avenue and Lawton Street on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Noriega Street Repairs Delayed
Due to complaints from other supervisors who were concerned that Noriega was being repaved "out of turn," Noriega Street repairs have been pushed back to the 2008-2009 fiscal year, which means the work won't start before next summer. The project planning has been completed and includes 25th to 27th avenues, and 35th Avenue to the Lower Great Highway.

Sava Pool Renovations on Schedule
I am pleased to report that the almost $17 million Larsen Park Sava Pool renovation is proceeding on schedule - construction began last month and will be completed in November 2008.

The new facility will house eight 25-yard-long lanes in a multi-purpose pool to accommodate recreation, lap and competitive swimming. The new design will maximize the use of natural lighting and ventilation with rooftop monitors and a south-facing window wall. There will be minimum impact to existing trees and a low roof height appropriate to neighborhood scale. There will be an inviting outdoor courtyard and entrance lobby, a reception office, new men's and women's locker rooms and restrooms, and lifeguard and staff facilities.

Those of you who fought long and hard for many years to have Sava Pool renovated are to be congratulated for your patience and commitment. The new Sava Pool will be a fine addition to our Sunset neighborhood, and I am proud to have been a small part of making it happen.

Clean-Up Activities
The SF Recreation and Park Department has begun cutting back the vegetation along Lincoln Way, beginning at 19th Avenue and working west to the beach. It is a hard, slow job with an anticipated November completion date. The SF Department of Public Works is working on Sunset Boulevard, trimming trees and cutting back vegetation.

I had a great time last month working with neighborhood volunteers painting out graffiti on Noriega Street, between 19th Avenue and the Great Highway. More such Saturday events will be planned, since graffiti "artists" have plagued the Sunset recently.

Volunteers Wanted to Help at Office
A couple of my terrific volunteers are going to be leaving my office for other responsibilities during the fall and winter months and we are seeking new people to answer the telephones, write letters, and respond to constituent calls for assistance. If you have a half-day each week to contribute to your neighbors and your district, please give my office a call: 554-7460.

In Memory of Officer Bryan Tuvera
Sadly, I attended the dedication of the Officer Bryan Tuvera Community Room at Taraval Police Station on Aug. 7. You will remember that Tuvera was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 23, 2006, in the Sunset. A plaque inscribed in Tuvera's honor was installed on the community room wall, and will serve to remind all who enter of his ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom.
